Little Piece
Little Piece is a homage to Leon Kirchner, composed for a concert celebrating his 70th birthday. Concise, as if an inscription on the inside of a ring, it incorporates refracted elements of his own music.
Despite its relative brevity, Little Piece compresses a considerable range of material into a tightly concentrated span.
Ballade
Ballade does not follow a specific program or narrative. Its point of departure is instead the free structure and lyricism of the 19th-century ballade. At its core, the work is a study in progressive reinterpretation: an ongoing process of metamorphosis.
Sinfonia Traces
Sinfonia Traces draws on themes originally conceived for an earlier orchestral work, Sinfonia Concertante. In that context, certain ideas were not used and remained unresolved.
Recast for solo piano, those unresolved ideas take on a different life. What might have been embedded within orchestral texture becomes exposed, clarified, and distilled. Gesture is reduced to line; color to structure. The piano does not try to replicate the orchestra, it reveals what was latent within it.
Sinfonia Traces is a continuation of Sinfonia Concertante: a re-encounter with complementary purpose, finally heard, and with focus and restraint.
Con Sequenze
In one movement in three parts, Con Sequenze is put together through transformations of sequence, harmonic envelope, contrapuntal continuity and constrained texture. Conceived for violin and viola and separately here for solo piano, the work unfolds in two parallel contexts of the same contrapuntal design. This piano realization unveils a brief pre-coda expansion not present in the violin and viola version.
Elegy
Elegy, in memoriam Ivan Tcherepnin, interfaces a Yamaha Disklavier piano with an interactive Max/MSP MIDI patch by the composer. Musical phrases are performed and processed in real time as musical dialogue using pitch inversion, temporal delay, feedback, and two instances of inverted sequential cache. Touch velocity directly thickens or thins the processed chords. Many of these processes are clearly audible in the final three minutes of the composition.

Reformulées pour piano seul, ces idées irrésolues prennent une autre vie. Ce qui aurait pu rester enfoui dans la texture orchestrale devient exposé, clarifié et distillé. Le geste se réduit à la ligne ; la couleur, à la structure. Le piano ne cherche pas à reproduire l’orchestre : il révèle ce qui y était latent.
Sinfonia Traces prolonge Sinfonia Concertante : une nouvelle rencontre avec une intention complémentaire, enfin entendue, dans la concentration et la retenue.
Con Sequenze
En un mouvement en trois parties, Con Sequenze est assemblée au moyen de transformations de séquences, d’une enveloppe harmonique, d’une continuité contrapuntique et d’une texture contrainte. Conçue pour violon et alto, puis séparément ici pour piano seul, l’œuvre se déploie dans deux contextes parallèles d’une même conception contrapuntique. Cette réalisation pianistique dévoile une brève expansion précédant la coda, absente de la version pour violon et alto.
Elegy
Elegy, à la mémoire d’Ivan Tcherepnin, met en relation un piano Yamaha Disklavier et un patch MIDI interactif Max/MSP conçu par le compositeur. Des phrases musicales sont jouées et traitées en temps réel comme un dialogue musical, au moyen de l’inversion des hauteurs, du délai temporel, de la rétroaction et de deux instances de cache séquentiel inversé. La vélocité du toucher épaissit ou amincit directement les accords traités. Bon nombre de ces procédés sont clairement audibles dans les trois dernières minutes de la composition.

Жест зводиться до лінії, колір — до структури. Фортепіано не намагається відтворити оркестр; воно виявляє те, що було в ньому приховано.

Con Sequenze

Задуманий для скрипки й альта, а окремо тут — для фортепіано соло, твір розгортається у двох паралельних контекстах одного й того самого контрапунктичного задуму. Ця фортепіанна реалізація відкриває коротке розширення перед кодою, якого немає у версії для скрипки й альта.
Elegy
Elegy, памʼяті Івана Черепніна, поєднує фортепіано Yamaha Disklavier з інтерактивним MIDI-патчем Max/MSP, створеним композитором. Музичні фрази виконуються й обробляються в реальному часі як музичний діалог із використанням інверсії висот, часової затримки, зворотного зв’язку та двох екземплярів інвертованого послідовного кешу. Швидкість натискання клавіш безпосередньо ущільнює або розріджує оброблені акорди. Багато з цих процесів виразно чути в останніх трьох хвилинах композиції.

Little Piece ist eine Hommage an Leon Kirchner und wurde für ein Konzert zu seinem 70. Geburtstag komponiert. Prägnant, gleichsam wie eine Inschrift auf der Innenseite eines Rings, nimmt das Stück gebrochene Elemente aus seiner eigenen Musik auf.
Trotz seiner relativen Kürze verdichtet Little Piece eine beträchtliche Spannweite musikalischen Materials auf engstem Raum.
Ballade
Ballade folgt weder einem bestimmten Programm noch einer Erzählung. Ausgangspunkt sind vielmehr die freie Struktur und der Lyrismus der Ballade des 19. Jahrhunderts. Im Kern ist das Werk eine Studie fortschreitender Neuinterpretation: ein fortwährender Prozess der Metamorphose.
Sinfonia Traces
Sinfonia Traces greift Themen auf, die ursprünglich für ein früheres Orchesterwerk, Sinfonia Concertante, konzipiert wurden. In jenem Zusammenhang blieben bestimmte Ideen ungenutzt und ungelöst.
Für Klavier solo neu gefasst, gewinnen diese ungelösten Ideen ein anderes Leben. Was in der Orchestertextur hätte eingebettet bleiben können, wird freigelegt, geklärt und destilliert. Die Geste wird auf Linie reduziert, die Farbe auf Struktur. Das Klavier versucht nicht, das Orchester nachzubilden; es offenbart, was darin latent war.
Sinfonia Traces ist eine Fortsetzung von Sinfonia Concertante: eine erneute Begegnung mit ergänzender Zielsetzung, endlich hörbar geworden, mit Konzentration und Zurückhaltung.
Con Sequenze
In einem Satz aus drei Teilen wird Con Sequenze durch Transformationen von Sequenz, harmonischer Hüllkurve, kontrapunktischer Kontinuität und begrenzter Textur zusammengefügt. Für Violine und Viola konzipiert und hier eigenständig für Klavier solo realisiert, entfaltet sich das Werk in zwei parallelen Kontexten desselben kontrapunktischen Entwurfs. Diese Klavierfassung enthüllt eine kurze Erweiterung vor der Coda, die in der Fassung für Violine und Viola nicht vorhanden ist.
Elegy
Elegy, im Gedenken an Ivan Tcherepnin, verbindet ein Yamaha-Disklavier mit einem vom Komponisten entwickelten interaktiven Max/MSP-MIDI-Patch. Musikalische Phrasen werden in Echtzeit gespielt und als musikalischer Dialog verarbeitet, unter Verwendung von Tonhöhenumkehrung, zeitlicher Verzögerung, Rückkopplung und zwei Instanzen eines invertierten sequenziellen Caches. Die Anschlagsgeschwindigkeit verdichtet oder verdünnt die verarbeiteten Akkorde unmittelbar. Viele dieser Prozesse sind in den letzten drei Minuten der Komposition deutlich hörbar.

In un unico movimento articolato in tre parti, Con Sequenze è costruito attraverso trasformazioni della sequenza, dell’inviluppo armonico, della continuità contrappuntistica e di una tessitura vincolata. Concepito per violino e viola, e separatamente qui per pianoforte solo, il lavoro si dispiega in due contesti paralleli dello stesso disegno contrappuntistico. Questa realizzazione pianistica rivela una breve espansione prima della coda, assente nella versione per violino e viola.
